Kambi kolams are built from straight, confident lines, and this one frames the grid like a small house plan: an outer square, an inner diamond, and petals reaching into the four corners. The contrast of square against diamond is what gives the design its snap, so keep the lines straight and the corners sharp.
How to draw it
- 1
Place a 5 × 5 grid of dots, evenly spaced.
- 2
Draw a square just outside the grid, keeping the lines straight.
- 3
Draw the inner diamond through the middle ring of dots.
- 4
Loop a petal into each corner, between square and diamond.
- 5
Circle the dot at the middle of each side, then add the centre bindu.
Tradition note: kolams are drawn at dawn on a washed threshold and swept away by evening. Rice flour is the traditional medium, so the drawing doubles as food for ants and small birds.
