August 2026 is Chennai's most celebratory month: the city marks its 387th birthday with a week of Madras Day heritage walks and talks, Independence Day brings ceremonies to Fort St. George, and the Aadi season closes out with Aadi Perukku offerings on the 3rd. Meanwhile, the western suburbs are still waiting on the Yellow Line's repeatedly postponed opening day.
The Big Stories
Madras Week: the city turns 387
Madras Day on 22 August marks the founding of the city in 1639, and the surrounding week (17 to 23 August) fills up with heritage walks through George Town and the Fort, photo exhibitions, talks, and food events. Walk slots fill quickly, so book early.

FestivalIndependence Day at Fort St. George
The state flag hoisting on 15 August centres on Fort St. George, with cultural programmes across the city. Aadi season also winds down in mid-August, so this is the last stretch of temple festivals and T. Nagar discount crowds until the year-end season.

MetroThe Yellow Line is built, cleared, and waiting for opening day
The first section of Metro Phase 2, the 14.6 km elevated stretch from Poonamallee to Vadapalani via Porur, has cleared its safety inspections, but the opening expected in July has been postponed and a formal inauguration date is still awaited. Our Phase 2 hub covers the stations, interchanges, and what to expect at launch.

WeatherHot, humid, with scattered showers
Expect 27 to 36 degrees with high humidity and occasional southwest monsoon spillover, much like July. Overcast evenings are common, which makes heritage walks and beach outings more comfortable than in peak summer.
