Chennai's civic services are managed primarily by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), one of the oldest municipal bodies in India, established in 1688. The Corporation oversees water supply, sanitation, roads, street lighting, and building permissions across the city's 200 wards spread over 15 zones. For most day-to-day civic issues, the GCC helpline (1913) and the Namma Chennai app are the fastest starting points.

Electricity is supplied by TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation), with area-specific section offices handling connections, billing, and outage reporting. Water and sewerage fall under Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), which maintains a network of treatment plants, pumping stations, and desalination facilities that serve the metropolitan area. For new connections or complaints, residents can use the CMWSSB helpline or visit zonal offices.

Chennai's police force operates under the Greater Chennai Police commissionerate, with law and order stations, traffic police stations, and all-women police stations distributed across the city. The 100 emergency number connects to police control rooms, while 108 reaches the ambulance service operated by GVK-EMRI. The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services (101) maintains fire stations in major localities.
