George Town
George Town, originally known as Black Town during British rule, is one of the oldest commercial districts in Chennai and the nucleus from which the modern city grew. Built around Fort St. George, the first English fortress in India, established in 1644, the area evolved into a dense warren of streets specialising in specific trades: Mint Street for textiles, Govindappa Naicken Street for electronics, and Kothawal Chavadi for groceries. Today, George Town remains Chennai's wholesale powerhouse, handling billions of rupees in trade daily, while its heritage buildings, centuries-old temples, and the imposing Madras High Court give the neighbourhood an unmistakable character.
