Avadi
Avadi is synonymous with India's defence manufacturing, housing the Heavy Vehicles Factory that produces the Arjun main battle tank and other armoured vehicles. Established as a military township, Avadi became a separate municipal corporation in 2021, carved out of the Chennai Metropolitan Area. The area has a distinct character shaped by its orderly cantonment layout, military institutions, and a strong working-class community. Despite being on Chennai's western periphery, Avadi is well connected by suburban rail and the NH48 highway.
