Sringeri Sharadamba Temple
A temple dedicated to Goddess Sharadamba (Saraswati) in T. Nagar, affiliated with the Sringeri Sharada Peetham in Karnataka.
History
The Sringeri Sharadamba Temple in T. Nagar is an extension of the ancient Sringeri Sharada Peetham in Karnataka, one of the four cardinal mathas (monasteries) established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The Chennai temple was established to serve the spiritual needs of the city's large community of devotees who follow the Sringeri tradition. Goddess Sharadamba, a form of Saraswati, is worshipped here as the deity of knowledge, learning, and the arts. The temple maintains close ties with the Sringeri main mutt, and the Shankaracharya of Sringeri has visited and blessed the Chennai temple on multiple occasions.
Architecture
The temple follows the traditional South Indian style with a well-proportioned vimana over the sanctum. The main deity, Goddess Sharadamba, is seated on a lotus, holding a veena and a book, symbolising music and knowledge. The temple has a serene and scholarly ambiance, with a spacious mandapam used for discourses and musical performances. A separate shrine dedicated to Adi Shankaracharya houses his idol in a meditative posture.
