Sri Sakkarai Amma Temple
A serene temple on Kalakshetra Road in Thiruvanmiyur, built in 1901 on the samadhi of the revered saint Sri Sakkarai Amma, combining spiritual worship with meditation and community service.
History
The Sri Sakkarai Amma Temple was constructed in 1901 by Dr. M.C. Nanjunda Rao, the prime disciple of Sri Sakkarai Amma, on her samadhi (final resting place). The inaugural Maha Kumbabishekam was performed that same year, consecrating the temple as a place of worship and contemplation. Sri Sakkarai Amma is venerated as a divine feminine manifestation whose teachings emphasised compassion, inner peace, and universal harmony. The temple is managed by the Late Dr. MCN Private Religious Trust and underwent a major renovation in 2001, with a second Maha Kumbabishekam performed in 2002 to rededicate the restored structure. The temple uniquely honours the universality of the divine, with images of Sri Krishna, Nataraja, Buddha, and Jesus adorning its walls alongside the central shrine.
Architecture
The temple features two main halls used for chanting and spiritual discourses. The central sanctum houses the samadhi shrine of Sri Sakkarai Amma. A spacious meditation hall with provided mats offers a serene space for contemplation. The Dr. MCN Memorial Hall within the complex serves multiple community purposes. The temple grounds are landscaped with flowering plants, creating a tranquil atmosphere distinct from the busier neighbourhood temples of south Chennai.
