History

Our Lady of Light Church, commonly known as Luz Church, is believed to be the oldest church in Chennai. According to tradition, Portuguese sailors caught in a violent storm at sea were guided to safety by a miraculous light on the shore. In gratitude, they built this church in 1516 and named it "Nossa Senhora da Luz" (Our Lady of Light). The Luz area in Mylapore derives its name from this church.

Architecture

The church is a modest Portuguese colonial structure with thick whitewashed walls, a simple bell tower, and an altar brought from Portugal. Unlike grander cathedrals, its charm lies in its simplicity and age.
