History

The Navadurgai Amman Temple in Indira Nagar, Adyar, is dedicated to Navadurga, the nine manifestations of Goddess Durga worshipped during the nine nights of Navaratri. The temple was established by local residents and has grown into an important spiritual centre for the Indira Nagar and Adyar community. Each of the nine forms of the Goddess, from Shailaputri to Siddhidatri, is represented within the temple. The annual Navaratri festival is the highlight of the temple calendar, drawing devotees from across south Chennai for nine nights of music, dance, and worship.

Architecture

The temple features a compact but richly decorated sanctum with the main deity, Navadurgai Amman, in a standing posture wielding weapons and seated on a lion. Nine smaller idols of the individual Durga forms line the inner walls. The temple entrance has a painted gopuram with depictions of the Goddess defeating the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Kolam (rangoli) patterns adorn the temple floor, especially during festivals.
