A centuries-old temple dedicated to Goddess Kali in George Town, believed to have been visited by Robert Clive before the Battle of Arcot.
History
The Kalikambal Temple is one of Chennai's oldest temples, originally located near the shore before being relocated to its current site on Thambu Chetty Street in George Town during British road-widening projects in the 18th century. According to popular legend, Robert Clive visited this temple and prayed to Goddess Kamakshi before his decisive Battle of Arcot in 1751. The temple is especially revered during Navaratri, when it hosts elaborate celebrations over nine nights.
Architecture
The temple houses two main deities, Goddess Kalikambal (Kali) and Goddess Kamakshi, in separate sanctums. The temple features a Dravidian-style gopuram, a pillared mandapam, and stone carvings depicting various forms of Shakti. Despite being surrounded by the commercial chaos of George Town, the temple interior maintains a serene atmosphere.
