History
Established in 1851, the Government Museum in Egmore is the second oldest museum in India after the Indian Museum in Kolkata. Originally called the Madras Museum, it was founded by the Madras Literary Society. The museum complex includes six buildings spread across the Pantheon campus, with the main building being an Indo-Saracenic structure designed by Henry Irwin.
Architecture
The museum's main building is a fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture with its arched facades, domed towers, and ornate detailing. The National Art Gallery building adjacent to it features Mughal and Rajput architectural elements.
Visiting Information
Located on Pantheon Road in Egmore, the museum is accessible by Egmore Railway Station and bus. The Bronze Gallery housing Chola bronzes is a must-see. Plan at least 2-3 hours for a proper visit.
