History

The Arupadai Veedu Murugan Temple in Besant Nagar was established to bring the spirit of Lord Murugan's six sacred battlegrounds to Chennai. In Tamil Shaiva tradition, the Arupadai Veedu refers to the six temples where Lord Murugan is believed to have rested or fought during his battle against the demon Soorapadman: Thiruparankundram, Tiruchendur, Palani, Swamimalai, Thiruthani, and Pazhamudircholai. Construction began in 1995 and was completed by 2002. This temple consolidates the worship of all six forms in one location, making it a convenient spiritual destination for devotees who cannot undertake the full pilgrimage across Tamil Nadu. Over the decades, the temple has become an important centre for Murugan worship in south Chennai, drawing large crowds during Thaipusam and Skanda Shashti.

Architecture

The temple features a colourful Dravidian-style gopuram depicting scenes from the Skanda Purana. Inside, the main sanctum houses Lord Murugan with his vel (divine spear), flanked by his consorts Valli and Deivanai. Six smaller shrines within the complex represent each of the Arupadai Veedu temples, with idols and motifs reflecting the unique character of each sacred site. The mandapam is adorned with paintings of Murugan's victory over Soorapadman.

Visiting Information

Located in Kalakshetra Colony, Besant Nagar, the temple is accessible by bus from Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur, or by auto-rickshaw. Thaipusam (January/February) brings spectacular kavadi processions, and Skanda Shashti (October/November) features a re-enactment of Murugan's victory. The temple is close to Elliot's Beach, so visitors often combine both in a single trip.

Festivals

Karthigai Festival

November/December

The temple's most significant celebration, coinciding with Skanda Shashti and extending into the Karthigai Deepam festival. The complex is illuminated with thousands of oil lamps, and a special float festival (Theppam) is conducted with the processional deities placed on a decorated float.

Thaipusam
